Black Shuck

All down the church in midst of fire, the hellish monster flew, and, passing onward to the quire, he many people slew. - Old English Verse

The Black Shuck is a supernatural dog or wolf said to roam the East Anglian countryside. it has appeared in English folklore for centuries, often taking the form of a massive black canine with feiry red eyes. Although usually an omen of death, it has in some accounts been known to halp the lost to safety using an almost human intelligence.

The name Shuck may derive from the Old English word scucca meaning "demon", or possibly from the local dialect word shucky meaning "shaggy" or "hairy".
